A little upkeep on a predictable rhythm keeps your car reliable, safe, and cheaper to run over the years, and it spares you the nasty surprise of a breakdown that a quick check would have caught. The hard part isn't the work; it's remembering to do it.

A simple schedule fixes that. You don't need to memorise a workshop manual — you just need a rough sense of what to check monthly, what to service periodically, and what to leave to longer intervals. Here's a plain framework you can adapt to your own car.

The golden rule: follow your owner's manual#

It contains a maintenance schedule written specifically for your make, model, and engine, and it's the authority whenever there's a conflict. Different cars genuinely need different things at different times, so a one-size list can only ever be a starting point.

Two details from the manual matter most. First, intervals are usually given as mileage or time, whichever comes first — so a car that barely gets driven still needs its oil changed on a time basis, because oil degrades even sitting still. Second, many manuals include a tougher "severe service" schedule for cars used in hard conditions: lots of short trips, extreme heat or cold, dusty roads, towing, or stop-start city traffic.

If you bought the car used and the manual is missing, don't just guess. Most manufacturers put the same schedules online, and a quick search for your exact model and year usually turns up the official intervals. A trusted mechanic who knows the model can also tell you what it typically needs and roughly when.

If your driving looks like the severe-use description — and short daily hops in traffic often do — follow that shorter schedule, not the easy one. Many owners assume they're "normal" use when their real driving is harder on the car than they think.

Every month: the quick checks#

These are the fast, no-tools habits that catch most problems early. Once a month, and before any long trip, walk around the car and look things over.

  • Tire pressure and tread, following the pressure on your door-jamb sticker
  • Engine oil, coolant, and washer fluid levels
  • All exterior lights, including brake lights and indicators
  • Wiper blades, plus a squirt of washer fluid to test the jets

Every few months: the periodic service items#

On a longer cycle — often tied to your oil-change interval — a handful of bigger items come due. The oil and filter are the headline job here; the right interval depends on your car and oil type, so check the manual rather than relying on old rules of thumb. Around the same time, it's worth checking the air filter, glancing at the battery terminals for corrosion, and having a quick look at the belts and hoses for cracks or fraying. This is also a sensible point to keep tabs on brake wear, since pads and discs wear steadily with use.

Don't ignore the small stuff between services, either. A squeak that comes and goes, a light that flickers, a smell that wasn't there last week — these are the car talking to you, and they're far cheaper to chase down early than after they've become a roadside problem. Jotting them on your maintenance note means you won't forget to mention them next time the car is in.

With the seasons#

Weather is hard on cars, and each change of season brings its own checklist. Ahead of winter, think about battery health, coolant strength, tires suited to the cold, and a working heater and defroster. Before summer, pay attention to the cooling system and air conditioning, since heat is what pushes a tired cooling system over the edge.

Wiper blades tend to need replacing around these transitions too, worn down by summer sun or winter ice. Matching your car to the season it's about to face is one of the easiest ways to avoid a weather-related breakdown.

If you live somewhere with real winters, this is also the time to check that your emergency kit is stocked and that the tires you're running suit the conditions ahead. Preparation like this costs little, and it matters most on exactly the days you didn't see coming.

Once a year and beyond#

Some jobs come around slowly, and several belong in a professional's hands. An annual service is a good anchor: a mechanic can inspect the brakes properly, check the suspension and steering, replace the cabin air filter, and spot wear you'd never notice from the driveway.

Longer-interval items are where the manual really earns its keep, because getting them wrong is costly:

  • Coolant, brake fluid, and transmission fluid changes at their specified intervals
  • Spark plugs, on the schedule for your engine
  • The timing belt, if your car has one — this one is critical, as a snapped belt can wreck the engine, so never let it run past its interval

These aren't monthly worries, but missing them is how small maintenance turns into big repairs.

Make the schedule your own#

A plan only works if you actually follow it, so write yours down. Keep a simple log of what you did and when, whether that's a notebook in the glovebox, a note on your phone, or reminders set to nudge you when the next check is due. Recording the mileage and date of each service also helps if you ever sell the car, since a clear history reassures a buyer.

Keep the paperwork from every professional service in one place, too. Beyond proving the history to a future buyer, it lets a new mechanic see what's already been done, so nothing gets needlessly repeated or quietly missed.
